“Let each one give according as he has determined in his heart, not
grudgingly or from compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
Tithing
produces a spiritual transformation in the person tithing, since he or she is
acknowledging that everything they have comes from God. It is putting God first
in our lives. It is, in effect, saying “thank you, God, for all the blessings
you have given me.” Tithing
means one collection for the parish at Mass, with the true spirit of offering
oneself with the offering of Christ. For the individual, it tells us what God
expects. Most important, is always the spiritual benefits that come to the
tither and the parish community. Tithing establishes a proper sense of values.
It helps us remember that God comes before all else and that everything we have
comes from Him. Tithe
means tenth. It is the first tenth of a wage earners income. It is truly giving
back to God something God gave in the first place. It is budgeting God first.
Typically, the first 5% is given back to God through the parish church. The
other 5% can be given to any charity of your choice, including the Bishop’s
Annual Appeal, the national collections taken up at Mass, and Tithing
is a decision between you and God. No one will ever ask if you are tithing, but
we hope you will. The benefits will be obvious to you, as they have been obvious
to us as a parish community. If you wish to learn more about tithing you may contact the parish office, or our parish tithing coordinator, Gemma Farrell (609-275-7076).
